FAQ

What is the difference between coaching and counseling?

Coaching and counseling have a lot in common! Both focus on working through emotional discomfort and build on life-enhancing skills in a safe and supportive space. In general terms, coaching is action oriented with a future focus while counseling is coping oriented with opportunity to focus on the past, present, and future. Training, certification, and licensing are the biggest differences. Coaches can have varying levels of training and certifications whereas counselors are licensed and governed by their state’s licensing board. Counselors have the additional ability to diagnose and treat mental disorders.

What if I or my gifted child needs counseling?

If it is determined that you or your child could benefit from counseling services we will discuss with you why be believe that to be true and will provide you with referrals to mental health counselors who are trained in the particular needs of gifted individuals.

Can I use my insurance to pay for services?

No. Unfortunately, most insurance providers will only cover the cost of services when there is a diagnosis and services are provided by licensed professionals.

What if I cannot afford your services?

We do not want finances to be a barrier to support! We offer a sliding fee scale based on income and family size.  For some services we occasionally have scholarship funds available. Please ask and we will work with you to find a workable solution.

How often are the sessions?

The number of sessions varies depending on the family’s individualized plan. We have events that are one day or evening. We have discussion groups that run one evening a week for 7 weeks. We have programs that begin with one session a week for four weeks and can be extended as needed. We also have summer events for children that meet for half a day each day for a week.

How long does it take for your services to help?

How quickly positive change occurs varies from family to family and depends on multiple factors such as commitment to attending the sessions, engagement of the individuals, and willingness to persevere through the discomfort of making changes to behavior. This can be discussed in more detail during the free consultation.

Are all sessions in person? What if I cannot be there?

We offer remote/on-line sessions when it does not negatively impact the learning. Not all events are successful on-line, especially for children. Events may be fully in person, fully on-line, or hybrid. Hybrid events allow attendees to be in person or to be online at the same time. Options will be clearly indicated for each event.
